The 2016 Nepal Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) is designed to provide data for monitoring the population and health situation in Nepal. The 2016 NDHS is the fifth Demographic and Health Survey conducted in Nepal since 1996. The objective of the survey is to provide up-to-date estimates of fertility levels and preferences, marriage, sexual activity, family planning methods, breastfeeding practices, nutrition, anemia, childhood and maternal mortality, maternal and child health, HIV/AIDS and other sexually
transmitted infections (STIs), women’s empowerment, domestic violence, and hypertension that can be used by program managers and policymakers to evaluate and improve existing programs.

The 2016 NDHS was implemented by New ERA under the aegis of the Ministry of Health of Nepal. Data collection took place from 19 June 2016 to 31 January 2017. Funding for the survey was provided by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). ICF provided technical assistance through The DHS Program, a USAID-funded project providing support and technical assistance in the implementation of population and health surveys in countries worldwide.
