Our work towards the goal of zero preventable deaths strengthens the delivery of resilient, high-quality basic and comprehensive emergency obstetric care at the national level and in selected provinces. This includes improving maternal healthcare systems and providing access to surgical repairs for obstetric fistula.

This is supported by advocacy and technical assistance to improve quality and expand the reach of maternal healthcare by strengthening the midwifery cadre through training, mentoring, and ensuring a favourable policy environment for recruitment, deployment, and retention across the country.

This includes reviews of the midwifery national training package, the training of working midwives, and the incorporation of basic standards into service provision. We are also partnering with universities to develop undergraduate courses in midwifery that are now available at five different institutions. The first batch graduated in 2020 and is now working in the maternal healthcare sector.
